As Malawi gears up for the 2025 General Elections scheduled for 16 September, Balaka District Council on Monday organized a solidarity march aimed at promoting peace and tolerance throughout the electoral period.
The march, which started at Chingeni Trading Centre and concluded at Balaka Stadium, brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including civil society organizations, political party representatives, traditional leaders, and community members.
YONECO also joined the event as a way of reaffirming the organization’s commitment to supporting peaceful, fair, and credible elections in the country.
Speaking during the event, officials from the council emphasized the need for unity and non-violence as the election period draws closer. They urged all political actors and citizens to engage in issue-based campaigns and to avoid hate speech or actions that could incite conflict.
The solidarity march is part of broader efforts by local authorities and stakeholders to foster a peaceful environment before, during, and after the elections.
YONECO expects similar initiatives to be rolled out in other districts of Malawi as well.
